Profile:

Brita Fernandez Schmidt has over 15 years of experience researching and working on women’s human rights, gender, social inequality and development. Her particular area of expertise is violence against women and women’s civil and political participation. Brita has worked in a number of non-governmental organisations dedicated to women’s rights and gender equality over the past years.

Currently, she is the Executive Director for Women for Women International, an organisation that mobilizes women to change their lives through a holistic approach that addresses the unique needs of women in conflict and post-conflict environments. Prior to this she led the programmes and policy work of another women’s rights organisation, Womankind Worldwide, and contributed to the organisation to help it grow strategically. During her time there Brita led the White Ribbon Campaign from 1999 to 2002, working closely with leading UK women’s organisations.

From 2003-2008 Brita was the Chair of the Gender & Development Network, a role that enabled her to learn how to bring organisations together and to more effectively represent their views to government. Other posts include working for the European Women’s Lobby in Brussels where Brita gained extensive experience of working with the European Commission and the European Parliament and Council.
